Most of you know the phrase from Game of Thrones, “Winter is Coming,” and while we (probably) don’t have to worry about the white walkers, it’s time to think about winterizing our homes. Some things can be done, while the weather is still nice- like cleaning out your gutters. It’s a pain, but so much easier to do now than when they are full, it’s pouring down rain, and you’re on a ladder trying to clean them out!
You should also look around the house for any repairs that may need to be made before winter is here. Does the roof need repairs? Are there windows that need replacing? Is there plumbing that needs attention? All of these things are easier done now…
As winter approaches, but before it freezes, make sure to turn off your outside faucets and insulate them and any pipes that are visible. Check the windows and doors and reapply more caulking if they need it. (if you can see a gap of more than the width of a nickel, then it’s time for caulk!)
Once you turn on your heat, remember to reverse the direction of your ceiling fans!
If you are planning on replacing windows or water heaters, think about doing that before the end of the year so you can take it off your taxes! It will lessen the hole in your wallet!
If you have a chimney, now is the time to have it cleaned out. As one of my bosses used to say: “Safety is Paramount!”
Lastly, make sure you ready up all your winter tools- the snow shovel, the ice scraper for the car, and ice melt or salt for the sidewalks. It’s better to remember that you are out of ice melt now, than when you really need it!
